There is a big of a risk buying second hand laptops. Laptops have a shorter shelf life than a standard computer (which, according to the ATO effective depreciation life is 5 years, laptops is about three years). I don't know if this helps or not.

What brand of laptop is it? The best ones are Toshiba, Acer, Packard Bell - apparently the brand makes a LOT of difference with laptops.
