Sammy lights the candle carefully, the flame illuminating the statue’s plaster robes and casting a warm glow over her tilted face. He’s too short to kneel at the railing, but he clasps his hands and bows his head.
“Ave Maria, gratia plena,” he whispers, slow enough to make sure he gets each word right. “Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus....”
Pastor Jim had told him it didn’t matter about your pronunciation when you were talking to God, that He could hear you even when you couldn’t speak.
Sammy believes that; it’s just not God he wishes he could talk to.
