maharetr: (Worth the Effort)

I am now medically and criminally(?) cleared to be a library clerk. (Finally!) My doctor as moved practices to one that doesn't bulk bill, but it turns out because I'm a uni student I get bulk billing, yay! Apparently, my blood pressure is 114/65. He was unimpressed with my expiration/inspiration. I did try and explain that I breathe from my belly rather than my chest, but alas. I stumped him over the real, sneaky reason I was there. shielding the squeamish and protecting people from my paranoia )

After the doctor's appointment, I had to hike it out to uni. Being a post-grad, I can get books out for something like 6 months at a time, unless they're recalled. So I got a particular book out last semester with a return date of early first semester this year. With two weeks to go until semester starts someone recalled the book. Dear book recaller: I understand the urge to Always Be Prepared and Get a Head-start on Semester but Jesus, thanks for making me hike it all the way out there under the risk of painful library fines when you could have waited just a little while... /snarl.

Still, I managed to inadvertently pimp Jitterbug Perfume on the train on the way there, so it wasn't a total loss. I was grinning madly over a page, glanced up to check I wasn't actually making a noise or anything (I've made a total fool of myself reading Good Omens, and later American Gods in public) and briefly caught the eye of a fellow geek across the seats from me. A stop later and fellow geek comes over and says "It looks like you're enjoying your book, what are you reading?" I display the cover so he can take a sheet of paper from his zip-up notebook holder/cover thing and write down the details. I fumbled my way through a plug saying random words like: "Good!" and "very funny!" and we found a common language in Terry Pratchett, so hopefully he'll at least give it a go. Of course, I remember now that the words I was fumbling for were "urban fantasy-ish" and "Have you read American Gods? It's not quite as good *ducks and awaits lightening from up high* very similar." Oh, well. I'll know for next time.
And then I...and then...etc )
