All of us can be proud of recent steps towards marriage equality.
The two marriage equality inquiries currently underway received a large majority of submissions in favour of reform. The Senate inquiry received 44,000 pro-equality submissions, or 60% of the total. The Lower House inquiry received 177,000 pro-equality responses, or 64% of the total.
It's no exaggeration to say marriage equality is the most popular legislation the parliament has ever dealt with. The message from you to our politicians is clear - Australians from all walks of life want reform and we want it now. This includes Australians of faith, with 77 clergy signing a letter in support of marriage equality.
In the coming weeks there are several things you can do to keep up the momentum on marriage equality:
- There will be rallies across the country on Saturday 12th May. Click here for details of a rally near you.
- On June 8th and 9th there will be performances of the play, "8", an award-winning drama about the Californian marriage equality campaign. Funds raised will go to AME. Click here for details of performances in Sydney and Melbourne. Save the date for "8"!
- Also, don't miss the Senate inquiry hearings which will be broadcast through the parliamentary website on Thursday 3rd May and Friday 4th May. Follow AME's live tweets of highlights from the hearings.

This one should be shared far and wide: the House of Representatives has a very short, very simple survey about marriage equality, ie, should we have it? Word is that it's so far been spammed by naysayers, so it would be cool if that could be turned around. The survey is here: http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/House_of_Representatives_Committees?url=spla/bill%20marriage/index.htm (snarfed from lizbee)
Legal ceremonies for same-sex couples
The ACT Legislative Assembly has passed a Greens bill allowing same-sex couples to recognise their relationships with a legal ceremony...The bill will become law in about two weeks.
Also: ABC poll
Should the Federal Government overturn the ACT same-sex legal ceremony bill?
Yes 28%
No 72%
764 votes counted

A newspaper headline I never thought I'd see. It's going to take a long time for Nattrass's legacy to fade in my mind, but how's that to start? (click on the image to read the article)
