A newspaper headline I never thought I'd see. It's going to take a long time for Nattrass's legacy to fade in my mind, but how's that to start? (click on the image to read the article)
:) I've got that mixture of irritated that it's still frkn necessary to say stuff like that, and happy that it's said.
Last week I was reading 'The Rise of the Creative Class' by Florida - it's a hell of a book, and well respected, and the gist of it is that a. people define their identify these days more by how they express their creativity than any other index; b. creativity is THE key business strength; and c. creative people move to places which are characterised by DIVERSITY - artistic, sexual, lifestyle etc. He says that it's no coincidence that the cities which have the highest amount of successful (business-wise) creative people (San Fran etc.) also are the hubs of interesting sexuality [my use of of the word "interesting" ;]. And I can't fault his argument - I'm moving to Melbs for those very reasons - largely because of the bi-poly Vic community.
Hope to catch up with you on Mynxii's picnic rug tomorrow :)
I think given the outright viciousness Nattrass heaped on the gay community that Scaffidi was right on the mark in going out of her way to say 'hi, it's okay now!'
That's awesome about people defining themselves by their creativity. A beloved friend has worked at 78 Records for many years now, and out of X many staff (at least 10), only one of them describes their job as "I sell records". Everyone else has a variation of my friend's "I am a painter" *grins*
