Having read pretty much the same amount of the previous works in the Imperial Radch, I didn't find that having minimal memory of the setting was an issue for Translation State. But, and this might be the important but, I am entirely not a visual reader and in fact did not even notice that there were no visual descriptions; I was all engrossed by the internal lives of the characters.
On a different note: would you like to borrow Witch King to read at your leisure?
ETA: and we have a physical copy of Saint of Bright Doors as well, although Artisanat is still reading that, so it might be a few days.
