([personal profile] fred_mouse Jun. 7th, 2025 02:55 pm)

I really haven't been putting much effort into tracking things here; my last post about it was 10th of May. At that point I had finished 2 projects of the 10 I'm hoping for, and made good progress on three. I've not finished anything else since, but I have made good progress on some

Previous good progress

  1. towel rail - has not been progressed. I need a day a) without rain and b) that I have multiple hours available and c) (most importantly) that I remember this needs doing
  2. door mat(s) - I've used up all the existing 'yarn' and I have half a rag rug. Every time I am surprised by how much 'yarn' it takes. I need to work out where I stashed the rest of the strips while we had a houseguest, and assemble more.
  3. Teach myself to draw - this has stalled. I keep misplacing my drawing book or the sketch book I'm using, or the pencil. I need to get a better process.

Progressed since

  1. pink / white / brown crochet blanket -- crochet finished, sewing in the ends. I think I'm half done on the ends?
  2. brown / green knit -- this gets 4-6 rows roughly every second Thursday (when we game online) plus I've sat and worked on it while listening to podcasts.
  3. T's jumper - a handful of rows. I need to make sure to do this every second day at least
  4. blue / white virus blanket - I've finished the first of the two balls I had left, now on to the last one. It is just shy of 70cm square, and I'm on the 13th repeat of the pattern. I suspect this is the last repeat, based on available yarn. Hopefully I have enough to finish.
  5. Eldest's quilt - I have laid it out, I have worked out what is needed to finish it. I have made and joined four blocks and worked out that I was doing something different from the book, and now those are going to be the front of a cushion, just as soon as they aren't attached to the quilt any more (basically, I'm adding 1/2" to each so the finished size is 9.5" rather than 9", but hadn't noted that down anywhere).
  6. Knitting for Kitties - using up a couple of balls of yarn; the green one is done, and we have handed three squares over to [personal profile] purrdence

I'm reasonably happy with this progress. It is possible that either the knitting for kitties or the virus blanket will be finished next, because those are relatively portable. The former lives in my handbag; the latter is going to go in my uni bag (it is possible I will mostly stop carrying the handbag, because it doesn't fit a lunch or a laptop)

It's finally Friday! Whoohoo! It's a short day at work for me, which I'm looking forward to, because the rest of my day is busy as hell. First, work til 11am, then I go to get my hair cut and dyed. I'm a little nervous about this, but I'm sure it'll be fine. The person I'm going to was in the same shop as my former hairdresser (the one who died suddenly) and they do good work. I'm not asking for anything particularly tough. I'm a little worried about borking my back up, but I'll be fine. Then, its home to relax for a few minutes, then we drive 45minutes to get Jess' new computer. Then, we go grab dinner, and then head home. It's a lot, but it'll be good.

Unfortunately, it's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow, which just figures. Tomorrow we shall go down to get the frozen cat cremated. Once that's done, we have a bowling party tomorrow night. With my back, I won't be bowling, but I want to go to see people from work.

Sunday, we have games, which will be fun. I'm hoping the weather holds off tonight while I'm driving in the dark. The bowling is at 4pm, so I won't be out too late on Saturday.

Yesterday was busy, but not horrible. I had one spicy patient, who was scheduled incorrectly by a team member who is no longer with the team, so it fell to me to reschedule. They were not happy, but y'know, it's nothing personal, and I don't actually care that she's upset.

The other day, I went a little insane on pastries from Paris Baguette, a new bakery that opened in Towson. Holy shit, y'all, it was so good. The pastries are light and delicious and I will definitely be ordering from there again.

Tonight, since I'll be getting my hair cut, Jess is going to take care of dinner, which will be chicken. It's the first chicken I've had since the money came in. I'm sure it'll be good, but a little part of me was really enjoying the steaks.

Oh well, maybe more steak on Monday. We'll see.

I now have completed the trifecta of big box stores. I reupped my Costco membership and went ahead and got BJs, too. BJs had the creamer I wanted, and I've always been a fan of their fruit and veg. And Costco has Gimbap, and other ethnic foods that the others don't. And Sam's is cheap.

Okay, time for me to get my shit together. I still do have three hours of work to do today. Everyone have an excellent Friday!

This sequel to one of my favorite books of last year, a young adult post-apocalypse novel with a lovely slow-burn gay romance, fell victim to a trope I basically never like: the sequel to a romance that starts out by breaking up the main couple or pitting them against each other. It may be realistic but I hate it. If the main thing I liked about the first book was the main couple's dynamic - and if I'm reading the sequel, that's definitely the case - then I'm never going to like a sequel where their dynamic is missing or turns negative. I'm not saying they can't have conflict, but they shouldn't have so much conflict that there's nothing left of the relationship I loved in the first place.

This book starts out with Jamison and Andrew semi-broken up and not speaking to each other or walking on eggshells around each other, because Andrew wants to stay in the nice post-apocalyptic community they found and Jamison wants to return to their cabin and live alone there with Andrew. Every character around them remarks on this and how they need to just talk to each other. Eventually they talk to each other, but it resolves nothing and they go on being weird about each other and mourning the loss of their old relationship. ME TOO.

Then half the community's children die in a hurricane, and it's STILL all about them awkwardly not talking to each other and being depressed. I checked Goodreads, saw that they don't make up till the end, and gave up.

The first book is still great! It didn't need a sequel, though I would have enjoyed their further adventures if it had continued the relationship I loved in the first book. I did not sign up for random dead kids and interminable random sulking.
It's Thursday! We've almost made it to Friday!

Yesterday was a momentous day. The house is officially sold. The albatross is gone. The house that felt like my personal antagonist. (By the end, when there were problems, it felt like it was having problems at me personally.) Perversely, I'm having feelings about it.

I feel relieved, because it's over, but also a bit sad. It had been my grandparent's house since before I was born. We lived there until I was two with them, and then went to the apartments, which were literally around the corner. Then, when I was 17, we moved back in to take care of my grandmother. I'm 52 now, so that's better than half my life tied up in one place.

I remember it how it was, sparkling clean. All the years of Christmas morning, going over to open our pile of presents in front of my parents and grand parents, followed by the parade of family and friends. And all the animals that house saw. Tammy, Freddy, Sandy, Tigger, Flakey, Willow, Millie, Gracie, Mao, Samwise, Koty, Kyan, Tucker down to our current pair, Boodle and Yoda. All those memories. So many good things are bound up in those four walls.

But lately, there's been more bad things than good. Watching my grandmother die, my mother's death, Dad's slow deterioration. The flood in the basement, the heat being turned off for three long painful winters. The constant fear that if something happened, we wouldn't be able to afford it. The fear every rain or snow that this would be the time the roof leaked. It was a constant stressor. And with Dad taking up most of our time and energy, cleaning wasn't even a vague possibility. We spent our lives in constant filth, and no one had the spoons left to do anything about it.

Since we moved, so many physical symptoms have eased up. my asthma has improved, my anxiety, though still there, has gotten better.

Still, I feel wistful for what was and for now, what will never be again. I hope the new owners do an amazing job of refurbishing it. I hope it holds another family soon, and I hope they have good years in it. I'm just going to miss the good things that we had.

Tomorrow, I get off work early, and go to the hair dresser to see if she can make my hair look cool. It's way too long at the moment, but I haven't been able to afford to get it cut. I'm also getting it colored, because a vacation from gray sounds lovely. I will post a picture tomorrow, once it's done.

Then, we go to pick up Jess' new computer, and have dinner, and then come home. We're trying out Rodizigo Grill, which is an all you can eat Brazillian steakhouse. I'm looking at it as a possibility for the get together in August. It's a little cheaper than Fogo, so I want to see how the food stacks up.

Okay, time for me to get myself together. Everyone have an amazing Thursday!

This anonymous comment over on [community profile] fandomsecrets made me laugh:

"But we didn't have cable growing up, just 4 or 5 channels on the TV and kids shows were only on at certain times, plus we just didn't watch much."

I grew up in the city. There were three channels (ABC, 7, 9), until 1986, when SBS launched here. The addition of channel 10 in 1988 brought us to 5. Cable television wasn't a thing for most of that time. I believe that the regional areas had two channels. I presume that most of the remote areas had none.

I have no idea how old that commenter was, but the idea of 4 or 5 channels still feels like luxury. Even though I've (yet again) been reminded about just how long ago 1988 actually was.

ETA: also, the part of the city I grew up in was really close to the transmitters for at least two of those stations. Because of physics, some of my school friends couldn't get at least one of those stations at home, because they lived too close to the transmitters (and sometimes because there was terrain in the way)

this isn't an update or a TTRPG-related post, but I've been obsessed with this mashup lately and I wanted to share it:

You may get nothing but Ghost lyrics between now and July. I'm trying to learn the words to the new songs, but it's coming slowly. But the music is super catchy so I'm sure I'll get there.

Ghost is weird. They bill themselves as Satanic metal, but and they have a few songs that bear that out, but most of their songs are more pop or hair metal. And despite the lead singer saying that the new album is "darker," I'm finding it really hopeful. And as I said, their music as a whole is very catchy. We've got 1 month to concert #1. I can't wait.

Day two post back scritches, and my lower back is still peeved. I dislike it. IT's not as bad as yesterday, but still cranky. We'll see if today is the kind of "work things out" cranky or the "get worse as the day goes on" pissed off.

I've got some good steaks to cook, so I'm hoping for the former.

Tomorrow is a quiet day--nothing much going on. Friday night after work, we need to drive down to get Jess' computer from best buy. Then we're going to go forth and get a late dinner. It's a fairly long drive, so we're best waiting til my sister gets home at 6 to go fetch.

I got a reminder on facebook that 8 years ago on this day, we went to see a wrestling PPV. It was fun, but nothing we felt the need to do again.

This weekend is pretty busy. I've got a haircut and we've got to pick up the computer Friday night, the appointment to drop off Mao for cremation after a decade at least, and then off to a work party at the bowling alley. I will probably not be bowling, owing to the bad back, but I will go and have snacks and visit with people.

Sunday is less busy, with just two games, one that I'm DMing and then one that [personal profile] poisontaster is.

I'm definitely going to be sleeping in on Sunday.

Oh, and *finally* we're closing on the house. No more albatross around our neck.

And on that note, I'm going to go consider the merits of pants. Everyone have a wonderful Wednesday!

We've had a bit of rain - nearby weather station recorded 10.2 to 9am yesterday, and 21.6 to 9am today. I haven't looked attotal for the last week, but in terms of June rain, that is good, but not unusual. It is, however, still raining.

ETA: From http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_009172.shtml mean June rainfall is 151 mm while median is 156 mm, usually 13 days of rain. It is the second wettest month.

Forbes: Taylor Swift And Blake Lively: Subpoena, Spectacle And Scrutiny.
IMO, dragging Swift in just to get attention, and then pretending Lively is the one dragging Swift in is just showing off how little Baldoni's team has on the legal side.

Reminder: Lively is suing over violations of her (and her female costars') right to a safe workplace. Leave Taylor Swift out of this.

The LA Times: Blake Lively backed by advocacy groups in legal fight with Justin Baldoni over #MeToo speech law

I don't think it's being reported enough that Baldoni's team is trying to strike down the law protecting survivors of sexual violence and discrimination from defamation suits. As in, get it declared unconstitutional because suing your victims should be part of Free Speech. Holy Fake Feminism, Batman.

Here's more about the law that Lively is invoking because this is a labour issue: Legislation to Protect Survivors of Sexual Assault, Harassment, and Discrimination from Weaponized Defamation Lawsuits Signed by Governor.

Here's a Bloomburg piece about on of the "inspirations" for why California decided it needed this law [archive link]: Ex-FTC Commissioner Faces Storm of Sexual Harassment Claims.

One of the women in that case helped put together one of the amicus briefs [PDF of court document], so that the law she helped draft, intending to protect people like her, doesn't get struck down. She has now been stalked, harassed and doxxed for speaking up in support of the law, because the Lively hate train people are truly free of hinges.

A historical children's novel by a Ukrainian-Canadian author, based on Ukrainian teenagers and children forced into slavery during WWII. After watching her neighbors and finally her family getting dragged off by the Nazis, Lida, a Christian Ukrainian girl, is kidnapped along with her younger sister. They're immediately separated and Lida is sent to a horrendous work camp. She's skilled at sewing, which keeps her useful and so alive for a while. But then the Nazis need bombs more than uniforms...

This book is an impressive feat of walking the line between being honest and straightforward about how terrible conditions are while not being too overwhelming for children to read. Lida and the other girls endure and try to support each other. Lida gives a Jewish girl her crucifix necklace to help hide her identity, and an older girl advises Lida to lie about her age so she isn't killed immediately for being too young to work. The German seamstress Lida works with (an employee, not a prisoner) is occasionally casually kind to her, but also gets a gift of looted clothing from a probably murdered French woman, and gets Lida to meticulously remove the woman's stitched-in initials and re-sew them with her own. A Hungarian political prisoner, who gets better soup than the Ukrainians, advises Lida to say she's Polish, as that will improve her her food. Later, Lida muses, It seemed that just as there were different soups, there were different ways of being killed, depending on your nationality.

The book is interesting as a depiction of an aspect of WWII that isn't written about much, a compelling read, and a moving story about some people trying to keep hope and caring - and rebellion - alive when others are being as bad as humans can get. It's part of a trio of books involving overlapping characters, but stands completely on its own.

The afterword says that Skrypuch based the book on her interviews with a survivor.

Today:

  • 'tis wet. Very wet. be careful of water on the roads wet (not flood warnings, but the 'if you have a road that floods, it will' levels of wet)
  • driving tour for G attempting to hit as many items from their wishlist as possible. Beach and Bell Tower were possible; Fremantle Markets, caves, and whatever I've forgotten were not. We headed for Woodman Point, which is one place where I know that there is a car park right on the beach, so that G didn't have to walk very far (say, 10m total). Then drove what could be an interesting walking tour of Old Fremantle (markets, oval, gaol, arts centre, 2 * high schools), a drive past Heathcote, up the freeway, loop the loop around the Bell Tower, and then out to the aeroport.
  • relaxed afternoon, doing bugger all.

Yesterday:

  • Having a somewhat lazy day, after the hectic pace of SwanCon over the weekend (by which I mean that I was in bed well before midnight, and in fact did zero carousing, including failing to go to the Dead Dog). Slept in, dropped G in Innaloo, had anniversary lunch with A in Gwelup.
  • Other notable tasks of the day include bringing the washing in before it rained, running (and hanging up) two loads of washing, and setting the table back to 'every day' arrangement after having people to dinner on Friday. Every time I do that I think 'should do this more often' because there are so many fabulous people I don't get to catch up with nearly often enough.
IT's Tuesday and I have Regrets. I wet for the ASMR back scratching last night, and it was lovely. Relaxing and a little ticklish, but very good. (I need to get some of those little brushes, I loved them.). However, towards the end of my appointment, I noticed that my lower back was a little annoyed, and when I tried to get off the table, it turned out that it was SUPER pissed.

It's still angry today, and work is going to suck. I'll manage, but ouch.

We're officially closing on the house tomorrow, which is nice, I'll have to go over tonight to get a few more things, and then we'll be free!

There's really not a ton of stuff at this point, but I want to do a last run through and make sure I have everything. The most important thing is our documents. We need to grab the handful of stuff that's still relevant out of Dad's file cabinet. We're also picking up the frozen body of our dead cat, Mao. He died like 10 years ago, and we put him in there so we could cremate him when we could afford it. And somehow, we just never did. So now, we're going to do that. He deserves to be on our bookshelf o'ashes.

I'm not sure if I'm going to the farmers market today, we'll see how my back is feeling.

I did the post yesterday for the opening of CONfab's registration. It's virtual this year, held between Discord and zoom. It's a lot of fun, held between 10/17-10/19. If anyone is interested the registration link can be found here.. For more information about the con, you can check out the main website at https://confabcon.com/

Okay, time to go forth and take some fucking motrin. Everyone have an amazing Tuesday!
And somehow, we're back to Monday.

I had an excellent weekend. Saturday and Sunday were both filled with my favorite things, and while I am sad that I don't have another day to fuck around, I'm okay with work today. It's bound to be insane, but it's okay.

It's going to be a busy Monday, but in a good way. I've got work til 4:30, then an appointment for an AMSR back scratching at 5, and then back home for a psych appointment at 6:30pm.

https://www.instagram.com/fitzhairstudio/reel/DJzmxavy1S-/

The morning isn't getting off to the best start, as the dog has begun acting like an asshole. My sister insisted that he had to go, so I took him out, despite the fact that the pain meds haven't kicked in and I am hurting. He'd drag her down the stairs. No matter what she thinks.

I walked him up and down the apartments, and he did absolutely nothing. Then I gimped back in and now I'm pissy. Both with my sister, who wouldn't listen to me when I said that he absolutely did not have to go, and the asshole dog.

I was going to take a shower, but I don't feel like I can go in there, because the moment I did, the dog barked at a noise outside.

The dog is frustrating the hell out of me lately. He's such a sweet baby, but he's also neurotic and a total asshole.

Maybe this weekend, we'll take him for temperament testing at the doggy daycare.

Okay, anyhow. Sunday was fun. I had D&D, and then we made cheese fondue. I think I need a different recipe, because it stayed really thick, but it still tasted amazing. The hot pot still owns my heart, though.

Tonight, I think we're going to have carry out, and then tomorrow when I only have the farmer's market, I'm going to cook steaks. I have two Tbones, and an enormous tomahawk ribeye to cook, and I'm looking forward to it.

I'm debating what I want to have for breakfast now. I usually have a couple of hard boiled eggs, but right now there is so much food in my fridge that it's hard to decide.

Okay, time to get myself together for work. Everyone have the best Monday you can Monday!

I have made zero progress on The Artist's Way in the last, hmm, three? weeks (maybe four, maybe more? I have stopped tracking). I do intend to keep working through it, but I've been doing the cycle of find the book, put it somewhere to progress later, forget, lose the book. My general thoughts

  • the morning pages are working. I'm doing them in 750words, and that makes it easier in some ways and harder in others. The later in the day I do them the more grumpy I am about doing them, because they really do work for me if I can clear my mind in the morning.
  • the artist's date idea doesn't work for me. I suspect if I didn't already have space carved out in my life for me to just do my thing, it would make a huge difference, but as it is there is more stress in trying to Do The Thing.
  • I hate the principles, I stopped reading them daily because I kept wanting to argue with them. Too culturally Christian, and too USian alien mind set (I have the same reaction to a lot of self-help type books out of the USA).
  • I understand the point of the affirmations, and I have a document of them I can read whenever (I just keep it open, but I should do something more accessible with it), but I find doing that daily beyond tedious. I had it in my daily to do list; I'm taking it out as part of my going-back-to-study paring down (post pending, still making the choices on that)
  • In the bits I've read, I've felt quite othered, because I don't have a strong feel of myself as a blocked creative.

Long term, I intend to at least read the rest of it. I don't think I want to try and do as many of the exercises. I did a decent job of the week 1, and I might have of the week 2, and I have a log document that I'll leave open. But I think that reading the book and ignoring the exercises might be the best way for me to get anything out of it now. Possibly stopping at the end of each chapter, looking at each question, and allowing max 5 minutes on each writing task (if I feel like writing at all) and then not trying to do a bit every day.

the tl;dr: I didn't like this enough to try and work on it daily.

Backdated entry

Three of us got our annual flu vax today; this was slightly less organised than it might have been, and if I'd realised that the web page wasn't going to send the bookings through correctly (we got our confirmation SMSes after we got home) then I might have just tried walk-in (which the sign out the front says they are doing). Very much appreciate that for this month and next flu vax is free for everyone so we don't have to do the 'who is covered' thing. Reminder for Aussies -- flu vax! Get one if you haven't!

addendum Youngest attempted the walk in option, it was even less organised, which I didn't realise was possible.

I woke up SO fucking sore today. My head and back are just thoroughly pissed off. I took some meds, ad I may lay down for a few minutes. I had trouble gettin to sleep, until after 2 am. I'm very tired. fortunately, I don't have anything to do until 1pm and that's game.

Yesterday was an awesome. My back was behaving, and then I got up and futzed around, then went to go get a pedicure. I opted for the Spa pedicure. and had my legs rubbed until they were limp noodles. Then, we played Arvandor, which was a particularly awesome game. The team dealt with the reality of the Dracolich, and searched for clues, which had some truly outstanding role play. I was very proud of mu babies. They've come a long way from Dragn Heist and Mad Mage. It was really well done, and I'm deeply curioius to see what the players will do next.

The, I began setting the table with the assumption that my new hot pot would come, and lo, it did! One side, we used mushroom soup broth. Very tasty, very mild. On the other, we used Little Sheep hot hot pot broth. I was assured that it was meant to be the less spicy alternative! I may well have been, but it was still pretty spicy.

I had gotten all my Asian groceries from a online retailer named <href="https://www.sayweee.com/en">"Weee!". I really liked them, they have every type of asian you can imagine. They had the hot plate prepared meat, wihch was lovely, made my life easier. and easy mix broths.

All in all, it was a lovely sucess, with delicious food and sauces. I overbought a bit, so we're definitely going to be doing it again. soon. I just need to get another box of mild soup. I'm thinking a nice Miso this time.

After that, we took Yoda on a nice walk, and then came hom. It was the perfect day. Tonight, we shall have cheese fondue for dinner! I stocked up with sourdough bread and granny smith apples. I grated my cheeses, and got some white wine to add to the pot. I'm hoping this works as well as the hot pot did, and is tasty. We shall see.
First, game at 1pm. That'll finish up at 4, at which point, I'll start the garlic and wine in the fondue pot.

Tonight, we may go to IKEA to look at a cabinet for a potential pantry for our kitchen. We desperately need one, as the cupboards are jam packed. I'm hopeful. I'll probably do a bit of a walkthrough and see if there's anything else we want for our apartment. I wouldn't mind a squeezie for the bathroom mirror. And maybe a new kitchen rug.

Monday will be busy. I'm going to be busting my ass all day, then immediately afterwards, I'm going to go get my AMSR Scratch therapy at Fitz Studios. https://www.tiktok.com/@fitzhairstudio/video/7504892058067422494?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7320965213670114859

I've never done this, so I'm curious how it'll be.

After that, I hurry back to have my monthly check in with my psych doctor. Then, sleep.

But first, today! Right now, I am a giant sloth on the couch. Everyone have an amazing Sunday!!
