Maharet is now the owner of a brand-new, very spiffy looking laptop. To all those shop assistants who smiled indulgently at me like I didn't know what I was talking about when I asked about new laptops for around $1000, I smile sweetly and say "nyah nyah nyah nyah-nyah!" I got it for $999 from Officeworks, by some very nice luck. I'd seen a laptop in the Fitzroy Officeworks for $1300 a couple of days after I hit Melbourne, and was angsting much over cheaper (but possibly crap) second-hand laptop for $790 or said new one, which was actually just inside my budget. So I go back to said store to stare at laptop which will of course make up my mind. We (N and I) are told "that laptop's been sold, we're so sorry...but we do have the earlier model for $999?" It is hp compaq, has CD-R/DVD drive, built-in floppy drive, wireless internet, and then becomes a long list of figures and words which almost, but not quite make sense to moi. Price was also rather convenient because apparently I have a daily withdrawal limit on my account. Tried to buy a carry case ("carry cases haven't been standard for a while" said shop assistant looking politely sympathetic) which tipped the total transaction over what I'm guessing is the magic $1000 mark. So, laptop, but no carry case, but that's no drama, they're easy enough to find around the place ("what can go wrong?").

Also, while I'm sitting here all smirky and hyped up, I'm typing this is a net cafe, and got here by tram -- all by myself! Now all I have to do is get back by myself. ::picture me sitting anxiously by tram window, desperately looking for landmarks::

Plus, the public transport system here in Melbourne is no longer owned by the government. N (the friend I'm staying with atm) is low-income and a tafe student. She has cards (health-card and student id respectively) that declare her as such, but neither of them get her concession on public transport. She has to buy a card for eighty dollars each year to be considered concession. I mean, the fuck? ::appreciates Perth so much better now::

::Is proud. And smug::

Except for the fact that it doesn't seem to come with software! Apparently, that's now the standard way Microsoft fucks you over. When I discovered this yesterday in Officeworks I was all: "Bastards!" and the shop assistant nodded with genuine sympathy.

Also, more brain-picking. I've got Windows XP as an Operating System on the lovely, lovely laptop. I know XP probably has the ability to read Windows 98 word things, but will I hit troubles if I create a document in XP, then try and work on it,say on a uni computer or the home desktop comp which is Windows 98? I couldn't get a straight answer out of the sympathetic shop assistant. Do you have any ideas?
