See this here? This typing is me admitting I'm not actually going to do any assignment tonight which leaves me with Jesus fuck, 900ish words some work to do tomorrow. But okay. So I've been watching Supernatural…
Oh, Dean. Coming to this from a whole lota fanfic that whole defender, protector thing is so there. And actually, he's coming across to me so far as the better person of the two, which I hadn't really expected.
I've seen up to Bloody Mary and I know snippets about other eps. I know that when Dean says to Haley(?) in Wendigo "This is the most honest I've been with a girl. Ever." that that's a lie, because he told Cassie Everything which is revealed in a later ep. From the meta/analysis I've read, Dean tells Cassie Everything after it looks like the relationship is becoming serious after a few weeks. Sam on the other hand was seriously considering marrying Jess and said nothing. Sam lies bald-faced and badly ('cos, really, it's not that hard to check up and see if a cop is legitimate) to close friends.
Now, you can make a strong case that Dean intentionally doesn’t make close ties with non-hunters (with anyone?) for that very reason, but Sam not telling Dean about the premonitions of Jess's death even after the danger is over? Man, it's not like he hadn't just got a graphic depiction of why keeping secrets is a bad thing or anything…
Jumping back a bit, I watched Dead in the Water and immediately had to go back and read
poisontaster's Eye of the Beholder again, because it makes so much more sense now and oh, Lucas…
Phantom Traveler is probably the ep I'm most interested in so far. I love the fact that Dean keeps a knife under his pillow, and the message at the end… *flails*
Ages back,
angstslashhope posted a poll about the season finale along the lines of: what was the moment of greatest pain for you?
1. The fact that Dean knew it wasn't Daddy because Daddy would never praise him/affirm him/tell him he loved him 27 (55.1%)
2. That moment where *you* weren't sure if John was possessed or not, that Dean was so messed up to think his father expressing approval and affection meant he was possessed
11 (22.4%)
3. The fact that those sentiments exist somewhere in John for the demon to draw a twisted version from, along with the fact that Dean's right - he'd *never* express them.
11 (22.4%)
I didn't actually vote, if memory serves, because I came in way too late, but I'd been sliding from option 2 into option 1 while watching the ep itself. However, I wasn't too sure about option 3 because I didn't feel I'd seen enough canon to make up my mind.
Now I have, and gah!. Three!
Phantom Traveller is, I feel, a pretty important step for Sam. It's one of the first times he goes out and helps with something supernatural that wasn't even vaguely "Let's find Dad" related. He's not that sure of his feet, it shows when they're listening to the black box tape and he does the steeple with his fingers: that's him trying to look wise and knowledgeable and failing kinda cutely.
Sam ends up saving the day, which proves he does in fact know what he's doing, that he has the skills and guts to hunt, whether he wants them or not.
On the surface, it makes John's message* sting because it was Sam who saved a planeful of arses and Dean who freaked out and was helpless.
However, having watched the season finale before seeing that scene? "If it's an emergency, call my son. He can help"? That's John saying "My son is a damn fine hunter, and I send him in my place." That may well be as close as John gets to admitting to someone's face how proud he is of them. Hope Dean saved the message somehow…
*And please, someone has a fanwank that explains why they only got the message then when they'd been calling "like, fifty times" before? I'll take any damn excuse we can think up, I'm totally easy on this…
