Did anyone watch the 6pm channel 7 news earlier? I heard an ad on the radio (for the news. I know, it's all about the ratings, but still my inner purist cringes) talking about the "overwhelming results on our poll about gay adoption blah, blah" and I'm curious. I totally expect it to be overwhelmingly against, but the fact that we're talking about it at all on the news is still something, yes?

Second question: my laptop has been randomly shutting down on me. It's not throwing up a blue screen, or randomly restarting, just abruptly turning itself off whether I'm actually doing anything with it or not. I've backed up my important stuff (oh, lovely external drive <3) but is this a fixable sign of doom?

It was overwhelmingly against - i didn't see it, but heard about it later at about 84% against. What I want to know is - what question did they ask? Because really considering that you can get any answer you please. Also, news polls... 'so' reflective of actual society. Still the fact that it has happened - it has taken place, the families involved are happy - screw the rest. The discussion isn't exactly open, but at least it's discussion.

*nods* Word to your entire comment. Thanks for the numbers; even expected, they sting. Still, the fact that a legal adoption happened in my state? *little warm moment of pride*

I've been following this online, and I read a followup from a 'woman in a hetero relationship who has been on the adoption register since 2003.' And she was all very PC with the 'I'm sure those darn faggots are nice and all, but...' then she started going on about how they'd been allowed to skip procedure to get a baby so the govt could look good. The "what about meeeeeeeeee" can be taken as given.

Thing is - I don't recall anywhere any evidence that this adoption had proceeded in anything other than a strictly correct manner. Hell, they even had the birth-mother's blessing.

People are going to see what they want to see, not what is. But you know what gave me a warm glow? People from the adoption agency saying "this adoption went through months ago, even though it's only being released to the press now. And the boy? Happy as, beautiful, healthy, thriving."

We can take the giant raspberry in the conservative's direction as given :)

jaw was on the floor when I read that

very much a case of "and which alternate universe did you drop in from again?"

yeah, like any poll, knowing the actual question, and of course how many voted as well as the percentage in a direction are useful.

Knowing the audience that did the poll is useful too. A tv station news poll is likely to get that stations viewers only, and generally only the ones that feel strongly about the issue. An ask people in the street poll will get a totally different audience and totally different answer.

Well that funny I went searching for the poll (as I was curious too) and had a a very hard time find anything overly negative. The two poll results that I was linked straight too when I typed in 'Gay Adoption Poll Perth' were pretty positive and most of the news articles were positive. Must have been a bit of a beat up I recon.

Ohhhhhhh Nooooo that what my lap top did before it got so temperamental it would turn off if you looked at it wrong!

I really want it to be a beat up, especially because a story about "omg! teh scary gayz!" will bring more viewers than "cute baby adopted", but I think the sentiment of "gays are icky" still gets the majority vote in Perth atm, alas :(

Thanks for the links.

Also: Ohhhhhhh Nooooo that what my lap top did before it got so temperamental it would turn off if you looked at it wrong!

Gah! is that the time you were baking cakes naked while hoping on one leg to get it started? *whimpers* were you hoping in a circle or up and down on the spot? *takes notes*

On a more serious note, what was the actual problem? was it a harddrive thing or a "this laptop is two years OLD and doomed" thing?

I never worked it out. it got worse and i looked into it and it looked likely that there was something wrong with the casing and I needed more space so I brought a new comp.

Re: the second

Hmm, sounds like reasonable things, although it shuts down regardless of whether I'm using power or battery. Are you able to advise about cleaning connectors at all?
