I rented King Arthur on DVD to watch today, and ok, not the greatest movie of all time, I know. But there was Keira Kightley as an archer and a kick-arse warrioress. ::buttons get pushed all over the place:: There was also some good enough music that I want to go check out the soundtrack and some utterly stunning fight sequences on ice (although I fast forwarded thru the major, dull fighting at the end).
The first slashy gathering I ever went to, at Dome cafe in the city, someone said something along the lines of: "It was snowing, and all the guys are rugged up with cloaks and she's standing there in a friendship band and woad." (I liked the line so much I wrote it down, hence the remembering). And yup, it does indeed fall prey to the old male-dominated gaze of fantasy.
One Monday in the library we were unpacking the exchange when I came across a book on how to draw fantasy scenes, characters etc. Now, I know the rest of you are probably far more inured to this, but I really must boggle for a moment. Like above person said, when depicted in cold landscapes the guys visibly wore several layers of clothing -- pants tucked into fur lined boots, cloaks etc. The women? In some cases, a very carefully drawn nothing. ::shakes head::
Also, an interesting piece of censorship, if my memory serves correctly. When I saw a preview for King Arthur in the cinema there was a snatch of the fight on ice which in the movie went something like this: a man tells Keira's character "There are many lonely men out there", to which she replies "Don't worry, I won't let them rape you." In the preview (if my memory serves) she says "I won't let them hurt you." The censorship board getting twitchy yet again, maybe?
Edited: to quietly try and hide the fact that I cannot spell. At all.

After too many late night Northbridge experiences I am speculating that there is a separate subspecies of very thin women who have some sort of hotted up circulatory system and are immune to extreme weather conditions.
I was also quite taken with Lancelot's perfect hair.
