Floor is currently drying, awaiting the return of the carpet that will protect the varnish from errant paint splatters while I/parents/

Hmm, yellow? I guess it depends on the shade. I'd be tempted to go with an off white to make the room seem a little larger and brighter. Of course, yellow would make it warmer...

Hmm, I see what you mean, the wood is a fairly warm colour itself. You could even go for a pale blue or lilac.
Or, y'know, feature wall with the pride flag painted large...
