maharetr: (Worth the Effort)

[livejournal.com profile] black_samvara has bought this awesome word game: cards have an 'origin' question, giving facts about how a phrase/word came about, and from there you deduce/guess the hell out of whatever word it is. Selecting a card at random and slapping my hand over the answer before looking down (how you play solitaire with a 2+ player game), netted me the alleged answer to something that's bugged me quietly for a while: that whole thing where football is called football because it involves feet, and a ball? Where did soccer come from?

Origins: In 1863, the London Football Association issued rules for this game. It was called association football, and later just assoc.. Students attending Oxford enjoyed creating slag by adding "er" to the end of words that had been shortened. So assoc soon became this sport.

There you go. For that matter, where the hell did 'cricket' come from?
