Knitted last night, with the invaluable aids of this tutorial (seriously, the only sock tutorial I've found that does magic loop, toe up socks) and hand holding from M.
Wow, colour me impressed! I've never even tried a heel - I've always been too nervous about it! Maybe I should get a small pair of needles and give knitting a sock a go! That's great!
It turns out that turning a heel is nowhere near as hard as people say it is. It depends on the method (I'm a current devotee of toe up socks, which means that you do short-row heels which is 'just' wrapping and turning.)
Basically, I'd say that if you can do ribbing (moving the strand yarn back and forth between the needles) and knit/purl-togethers you've got all the skills you need. Go for it!
I've only just got the ribbing thing going on crocheting - I never got it on knitting. and the crochet was a fluke, since it was a pattern that I had to figure out. But I might have to give knitting another go one day soon :)
