SPN drabble: Independence Day

John’s trying to stop Sammy’s headlong toddle off the blanket when the blast rends the world. The bang locks John’s muscles, steals his breath. Sammy squeals and falls on his ass, pointing in surprised delight, face bathed yellow.

Knowing it was going to be like this doesn’t help; he flinches when Dean touches his arm.

“Do you want to go?” Dean whispers.

“I’m fine,” he says almost steadily, focusing on Sammy’s transfixed expression.

Dean worms silently under John’s arm, and John finds he can breathe with Dean warm against his side, even as the sky explodes into color above them.
