Title: Going gently...
Author: [livejournal.com profile] maharetr
Rating/Word Count/Genre: R, 100, Gen
Characters: Sam, Castiel, Uriel
Warnings: Character death, dark.
Summary: (from [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo) I thoroughly disapprove of duels. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet place and kill him. ~ Mark Twain

“Come,” Castiel murmurs. Sam stares, unseeing, and Castiel has to take one bloodstained hand to guide him.

Uriel’s close behind, too eager; Castiel glares him to a halt and takes Sam into the trees alone.

Sam stirs, the last of his humanity struggling to resurface, far too late. “Dean…” he gasps, like his brother might answer, like the blood on his hands might be someone else’s.

“Hush,” Castiel soothes, pressing two fingers to Sam’s lips, taking the breath from his body, embracing him as he falls. The fact that Uriel would have been more brutal is no comfort at all.

I was kind of nervous about posting this, but that's totally the reaction I was after -- Thank you so much!

Oh God, excellent! Very haunting. I love that it captures Castiel's sense of duty and utter despair at having to do this.

Yay! Thank you! This was one of those drabbles that felt like it *nearly* fit into 100 words for ages, so I'm really pleased it still comes through.

Gentleness

Well, it's some comfort to me, though I can see how it wouldn't be to Castiel. I was fascinated by Castiel's gentleness with Sam in the episode (while Uriel took advantage of the opportunity to beat on Dean, who was, last I heard, not suspected of being evil) and I wonder how much Castiel has learned about Sam, and how. Through his own (borrowed) eyes, or through Dean?

If no one else can be redeemed, I suppose Castiel's redemption isn't an entirely trivial accomplishment.

Re: Gentleness

I agree. Castiel- between the gentle way of mind bopping Sam in 'Heaven and Hell' and his two-handed handshake in 'It's the Great Pumpkin..'- seemed almost fond of Sam. You have to wonder if the Castiel in this fic is the one we see and love on the show. I think it is.

Wonderful!

Oh! Thank you so much!

I think Castiel is becoming gradually more gentle/less 'the ends justify the means' mentality as time goes on. There are things he'd do because he had to, like "stop" Sam, but that doesn't mean he'd do it without question, or complaint *crosses fingers*

Re: Gentleness

Yes, I wondered about that too: Castiel is *really* gentle considering Sam's being positioned as Boy King. Misha Collins is doing an awesome, subtle job of it: all through Anna's "I forgive you" scene, Castiel's making these little glances and making me think he's doubting, which thrills me. Thanks for the comment :)

Excellent drabble! Packs a punch, just like a good drabble's supposed to.

I enjoyed the Samuel Clemens quote. And this piece..?? Wow. Very powerful for so few words and extremely well-written. I very much enjoyed it. Thanx so much for sharing this. =)

*Googles Samuel Clemens* Huh, you learn something new every day. :)

And my pleasure -- thanks so much for letting me know you liked!

Ahh yes..gotta love Google. :)

Twain had some awesome quotes did he not? I used to have a long list of my favorites which I would post on the sidebar of my journal but then my motherboard crashed and I wasn't able to retrieve them. That was a sad day. Take Care!
