OK, probable emergency and panic here. I have a floppy disk that I've been writing my huge Creative Writing assignment on just fine. I insert disk to use it just now, it thunks and clunks softly to itself for a long while, then says it's not formatted and would I like to format it now?
My story is on that disk!!!
What do I do??
Edited about half an hour later. I've consulted with the parents, who reckoned what in my hearts of hearts I knew: the disk's fucked. Mum helpfully suggested that whenever I'm working from disk always save to hard drive. Yup, thanks mum.
It's not as bad as it could have been, lost story wise. I have a printed copy of Friday's version, and only did 500 words on Saturday when I'd planned to do 1000 -- that part is truly lost. (See? Slacking off is a good thing) ...but those 500 words were good words, dammit. They worked.
