Wednesday reading meme

I've not only been reading, I've been reading almost enough to justify the meme posting. Score!

What I finished:
Guards, Guards! by Terry Pratchett, which I'd not read before. I wasn't emotionally engaged as such, but it was an absolute pleasure reading this, and watching it unfold and then all come together. Pratchett had really started to hit his stride here, and it shows, glowingly, compared to, say, Mort, where the seeds were there, but not quite cohesive.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik. One of the three Hugo-nominated novels that made it through my Amazon-sample-chapter sample reading. I'll probably put all of those in a separate Hugo-reading post at some point.

What I'm reading now:
Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Second of the three Hugo novels. 70 pages in and so far, wheeeee.

What's next:
Seveneves is going to keep me busy well into next week, if not all of next week (800+ pages, oof. I'm budgeting for at least a week of reading/350 pages, then reconsidering). But The fifth season by N. K. Jemisin when I do get there.

Sounds fantastic! I greatly enjoyed Guards Guards, Uprooted and The Fifth Season. I like the idea of using the sample chapter function to decide whether or not to read something that made a list (of award nominees or whatever) if reading everything is too time-consuming or expensive. I may give Seveneves a try.

I've been whelmed by...so much. But neat, ordered lists of recced reading things, I can do! I don't have the reading speed of many of my friends -- hence, exactly like that, the time/brain-saving reading of sample chapters.

Seveneves is surprisingly great! Apparently people either love it or hate it, and I'm surprised how into it I am: it's really rather heavy on the technical details, but I'm using that to sharpen my speed-reading, and I've been trusting Stephenson to flag the really significant science bits. It's all really remarkably readable, and so many female characters doing many different things! I'm 170ish pages in, and keen for the rest.

I really hear you on being whelmed by much of life. After a bad day today, I just noped out of people, real food, games, tv, most chores, and taking a shower before morning. Luckily my brain hasn't noped reading or posting, or I would be praying for sleep while not wanting to go to bed.
