OK, I'm using BitLord 1.1 to download various episodes of Spooks season 3. I downloaded an ep a while back, which took about 24 hours at an average of about 7kb/s. I've selected another ep from the list and have been downloading it for most of yesterday, all of last night and patches of today. Still only half way through. There's gotta be a way to speed this up. Suggestions? Particularly those along the lines of "you need to enable X first, silly!" or something else simple that this newbie has totally overlooked, are very welcome!

The problem with torrents is that they require active users. And a fair few of them. It sounds like your using a torrent that lacks many seeds/users sharing. If you want active torrents that will get you a decent speed use:

http://www.mininova.org/
or
http://www.torrentspy.com/
(they are the two I use)

The trick is to get them when they are fairly new.

As for the "do x" trick, make sure you have set you upload to fairly high as your downloads=uploads.

These are older shows, so there's not going to be many seeds still active. It's like a bell curve on activity; it slowly builds after the show airs, spikes within 2 - 3 days, then starts to dwindle down.

I've only just learned how to do this. I notice that the new things take a few hours and the old things take days and days and (weeks). I don't see how it's possible to speed up because I think it has to do with how many other people want to see it.

Yes! The first technical advice I have *ever* given that was right! Yes!
