Okay, so this post was going to be me just randomly updating. Sort of going, "Hey, I'm bored, be bored reading how bored I am." But now I'm sitting here vaugely startled because there have been New Developments, not least of which is that I'm experimenting with lj cuts. Here goes.  ::crosses fingers, closes eyes and prays::

So I sit down in friendly library computer area and log in with usual student ID and password. All good. I open the internet, which immediately chucks up the library homepage, also cool. I type in livejournal web address and get a box demanding that I re-enter my student ID and password. O-kay -- why?

Turns out that they've updated the system or some such. The eternal and ever-absent/present "They" have realised, or perhaps just decided, that us students are being far to frivolous in our Internet use and are perhaps visiting sites that have nothing to do with said university or other worthy academic tasks. (Like livejournalling?) So every time we try an do non-worthy tasks they "request" that we declare who we are so that they can track us.

They've given us a handy link to assage all our fears and paranoias. And there's a long list of questions that they've asked themselves and will answer for us. Like: Privacy!? Hello! And the majority of the other answers start off with a decisive Yes or No. The nicely phrased equivalent of "Privacy?! Hello!" is something like "[Uni] reserves the right to make sure that everyone complies with the [uni] code of conduct. [Uni] assures students and staff that monitoring will be of the highest quality. [Uni] reserves right to take action against anyone found breaching [uni] code of conduct." Uh-huh.

Come to think of it, this probably isn't the best computer to be using to bitch about this topic, but the iron is hot and I'm striking. I feel all cynical and worldly, or something. Question: Am I over-reacting because of PMS or is this rant valid?

I'm shutting up now and going to write slash with the old-wordly technology of pen and paper. :)
