Last night was so totally what I needed:
cricketk,
special_trille and
sarren, there was yummy leek&potato soup with heavenly bread, there was Battlestar Galactica and oh! the pain and the squee!
[They're preparing to mercy-kill one of the Kobol crew. There's talk of overdosing him with morphine]
Audience: But other people might need that! Just shoot him, you fools!
Tyrol: [injecting guy with morphine] Hey, buddy. Rescue crew's here, you're going home.
Me: [not caring about the waste of morphine anymore] sniffle. Gahh...
And there was the lovely scene between Dee and Billy. He, clearly not knowing his way around guns, tries to carry it in his trousers.
Dee: Uh, you might want to put the safety on. *loves*
There were also songvids and Atlantis pretties. Speaking of songvids, I've been Googling the Dr Who vid with absolutely no success,
cricketk? Help? :)
Awoke this morning to find a VHS copy of Black Books Season 1. Much happiness ensued. After observing
wobowikkles perform obscene acts with pears, cinamon, sugar and a bit of hot water I attempted a similar feat and ended up with some pretty reasonable stewed pears for brunch and Black Books to watch. Life is good :)

Also, you're awake right now, yes?
Please convince me to spend $75 on S1 of BSG and S1 (okay, Sonly) of Earth2. I really, really want them, but also feel guilty spending money on things. But I really, really really really want them. And there's shiny! SHINY, I tell you.

See, I was going to be all mature and only buy one (by which I likely mean 'BSG'), but then I saw that at Best Buy - which is the only place that BSG is currently being sold because of this whole irritating thing with the UK vs the US releases and blah blah blah, if I buy them both together, I get $15 off! And they're already discounted from the list price, and... *justifies like a crazy person*
Um, and again: shiny!
Earth2 was this series in the early 90s about -- uh. Humanity lives on space stations, Earth is destroyed. After a while of this, kids start dying, and it's discovered that they're missing a bacteria(? I'm unclear on this) that allows them to breathe the recycled station air. So the mother of one of these sick kids gets together a group - they've found a planet that seems to be like Earth, and they're going to take a ship there and try and colonise it. There's a initial party (including the woman and her child) who are to go down and set up a base camp and all that, and then something like 5,000 people on a ship that will touch down a year after them. Some supplies and things like that had been sent ahead. (The planet is something like 21 years away from the stations, so they all did the deep sleep thing for a few decades.)
They're about to head down to the planet when the ship holding the initial team malfunctions, and people are forced to evacuate. By the time that they're on the surface, there are probably twenty people, some of whom weren't ever meant to reach the surface of the planet, as they were just crewpeople on the ship. Moreover, they've reached the surface of the planet, but terribly far from where the supplies were dropped, and then the series is about them trying to get back to their camp, and how they meet alien inhabitants of the planet, and it had moments of spectacular badness and amazing wonderfulness and won an Emmy and stuff, but was cancelled after one season.
Er. Aren't you glad that you said you didn't know? Sorry.
DVDs as food - brilliant! Why didn't I think of that earlier?
...I totally ordered them. Should be able to pick them up at the store tomorrow, if I can get out there. WHEE.

Maharetr YES! SHOOT HIM! SHOOT HIM!

The guy who died? He'd gone into jail because he was trying to cover for Tyrol, who was seeing Sharon/Boomer after they'd been ordered to stop the relationship. And then about two episodes ago, Tyrol managed to get the guy who died out of jail, and it was all -- LOOK, IT WAS VERY AFFECTING, OKAY? *sniffs*
Seriously, this series is so, so so good. And damnit, if I'm going to get into SGA -- NOT THAT I AM SAYING ANYTHING -- you should get into BSG.
(Also - this means that you're not mad at me, yes? Because it occured to me when I woke up this morning that my email from last night could have been misconstrued, and I was fretting and debating if I should send you another email and apologise.)

I'm going on record. If we're ever stuck in somewhere and being hunted by baddies, I promise to do my damndest not to let any of you die. Or kill you.

Also, I dislike Tyrol intensely, oh wait I've got the names confused. Is Tyrol the Chief? I was thinking it was the unpleasant aloholic guy.
YOUR EMAIL LAST NIGHT WAS TOTALLY FABULOUS. I am sitting answering it right now, but it's taking a while :)

Determined Survivor
Methodical, calm,
focussed. All the traits Mother Nature was
thinking of when she earmarked a species for
survival. You look before you leap, but you
don't hesitate too long. You'll probably be the
first one to die anyway as someone else panics
and dooms you both. The universe, and movie
cliche, is ironic that way. Still, chin up!
How's Your Survival Instinct?
brought to you by Quizilla
hee! See? Unlikely to kill you. Though from the looks of things, y'all're dooming me.
la la la. So, I was ordering things online for pickup tomorrow, and then I realised that BestBuy seems to have the USB TV card that I need to be able to capture BSG to my computer, and it's only $50 instead of the $80 or $90 that I was looking at elsewhere.
How important do you think it is that I have any money left after tomorrow?

See, the last few episodes of last season killed me dead. DEAD. When I pick up my copy, I'll -- you have broadband now, yes? I'll upload the episodes for you, if you want. Because they're so, so good. And includes some lovely Starbuck/Apollo stuff that makes me go all gushy inside.
AM SO PLEASE THAT YOU TOOK IT THE WAY IT WAS MEANT. No pressure. <3

Would uploading them to my webspace or postalmailing them to you be better for you?
(Again: I am looking at SGA for you people! There is apparently always room for more fandoms.)

So I think that from a survivalist standpoint, i'm okay. (And I suppose that I should point out that 'no money' at this point would actually translate to 'about $65', as I've just remembered that I've got $50 cash in my purse from before I got sick.)

Also, do you know much/anything about Starbuck's backstory? Just came across this and am all curious now.

That thing that you linked about her backstory is about the -- meh. It's poorly phrased at the absolute best. When she speaks to Leoben early on in the series, it's implied that her mother was largely absent and that he considers her to be more or less an orphan. I suspect that this is not because her mother is dead, but more because of some abuse or neglect. Can't remember the specifics of the conversation and mean to rewatch the episode asap, so I may have more 'insight' on that tomorrow.
We found out in 2x02 that her father was a classical pianist, so that's that. The jacket that she puts on in her apartment was his as well. (also, are you guys listening to the podcasts? Because Katee Sachoff and-- and the guy who plays Helo went into that set and did all the paintings themselves, and I thought that it was neat.)
She was involved with Apollo's younger brother Zak - she was a year (two?) older than he, and was a flight instructor during his last year at the academy. They were together, she passed him when she shouldn't have. They got engaged, and then he died. She didn't meet Adama until after Zak was dead, but he took a shine to her, apparently, and sort of took her under his wing a bit.
I believe that's all canon - I'm fairly anal about listening to the podcasts and that sort of thing, but stupidly didn't save the ones from S1, so don't have references for a lot of my memories. Can't recall them saying anything else about her past, though.

And I utterly loved Starbuck's place (do we have any ideas what was written on the wall?). She seemed to take quite some comfort from wearing her dad's jacket, too.

My family has no connection to the military. At all.
From:

I'm not sure what was written on the wall, sadly. I'm trying to find a better copy of the episode so that I can figure it out.
Also, how could you not like the Kara/Zack episode? Stupid reviewer.
From:

My family, though, are very much -- well, they're sort of the stereotypical Americans in a lot of ways, and I suppose that I blame the military for a lot of the things that cause problems for us. (Not that anyone's still in the military, but just that it sort of instilled some unhealthy beliefs, imo.)
More than you wanted to know, I'm sure.
